Job Summary

The Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute at the University of Utah seeks a motivated postdoctoral research associate.

The SCI Institute is a world-class research institute located within the new Warnock Engineering Building on the University of Utah campus. We are a highly dynamic, driven group of over 170 faculty, staff, and students. More information about SCI can be found at http://sci.utah.edu/.

The University of Utah is located in Salt Lake City, the hub of a large metropolitan area with excellent cultural facilities and unsurpassed opportunities for outdoor recreation only a few minutes drive away.

The initial appointment will be for a one-year period, with the possibility of an extension based upon performance and availability of funding.

Competitive salary and benefits are included. Salary range $55,000 – $65,000.

The position is available as early as September 2015.

Responsibilities

In addition to working closely with scientists, industry partners, and graduate students on research projects, the associate is expected to actively participate in writing grant proposals.

The research associate is also expected to contribute to the Caleydo Biomolecular Visualization framework – http://caleydo.org. SCI’s contributions to Caleydo are supervised by Alexander Lex, Assistant Professor of Computer Science – http://alexander-lex.net.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in computer science/engineering, bioinformatics, or a related field to work on varied research projects in visual data analysis. Potential candidates should possess a strong background in the fields of visualization and visual analytics, bioinformatics, or similar areas to conduct visualization projects for various application domains including molecular biology.

Candidates should have a substantial publication history (preferred venues are IEEE InfoVis, IEEEVAST, BioVis, Bioinformatics, Nature Methods, and BMC Bioinformatics), a good standing in the research community, as well as good teamwork and communication skills.

Preferences

Ideally, the candidate also has strong software development experience, especially for web-based applications.
