SCI’s Martin Berzins Recognized Among Top Architects of Scientific Computing’s New Era


The inaugural SCW75 honors the infrastructure leaders, informatics specialists, and simulation experts shaping the future of scientific computing

Scientific Computing World recently recognized Martin Berzins, a professor at the University of Utah Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute, as part of the inaugural SCW75, which celebrates leaders shaping the future of scientific computing across high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, simulation and research infrastructure.

Berzins focuses on how mathematical software, numerical algorithms, and analysis and parallel computing can solve challenging science and engineering problems in areas such as fluid dynamics, combustion, and atmospheric and lubrication modeling. Much of his work involves the Uintah computational framework—a software system used to simulate those sorts of complex problems—which runs on some of the fastest and most powerful computers available, including the U.S. Department of Energy exascale supercomputers Aurora and Frontier. Berzins and his students help develop the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Hedgehog software to improve how large scientific simulations run on today’s newest GPU-based supercomputing systems.

SCW75’s launch comes at a time of unprecedented investment across AI and scientific computing infrastructure, which is becoming central to discovery, simulation, and innovation. According to Intersect360 Research, the worldwide market for accelerated and high-performance infrastructure serving AI workloads reached $193 billion in 2024, up 121% year-over-year.

“Scientific computing has become one of the defining enabling technologies of modern research and engineering,” said Robert Roe, editor of Scientific Computing World. “The SCW75 exists to recognize the people making that infrastructure usable, scalable and impactful across industry and academia. These are the individuals helping turn computational investment into scientific progress.”

The inaugural SCW75 features honorees from 14 countries across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, reflecting the increasingly global nature of scientific computing leadership. The United States leads the list with 31 honorees, followed by the United Kingdom with 21 and Germany with 10.
