Dr. Lex received his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees from the Graz University of Technology. From 2012 to 2015 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow and Lecturer at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. In 2011 he completed a research internship at the Computational Genomics Lab at the Harvard Medical School. From 2015 to 2025, Dr Lex was an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor at the University of Utah. In 2025, he moved his primary appointment to Graz University of Technology but remains affiliated with the SCI Institute.
Alexander Lex’s research focuses on data visualization and human-computer interaction. He designs, builds, and studies interactive visual data-analysis solutions that help researchers in data-driven fields such as biology and medicine understand and communicate complex datasets. His work also investigates reproducible visualization, integration of visualizations with computational workflows, accessibility for blind and low-vision users, and infrastructure for crowdsourced user studies.
