Information about Cocoa and Chocolate
Cocoa and chocolate are incredibly healthy, the darker it is, the better. It also
connects to a rich history from several hundred years BC to the present,
and one that spans the wordl. Here are some links for more informaiton.
Favorite beverage #1: hot chocolate
February 1 is
National Dark Chocolate Day!
Chocolate in Utah
-
Mezzo, a slightly sketchy new Salt Lake Company that was making
some of the most original and delicious hot chocolate around.
Unfortunately, they all appear to be the flakiest business in town
and I fear they may have disappeared for good now as I cannot find
their products anywhere.
- The Chocolate
Conspiracy 774 South 300 West, Salt lake city, UT 84101.
- Hatch Family
Chocolates in the Avenues of SLC. I have not yet tried their
product. 376 8th Avenue, Suite A
Salt Lake City, UT 84103.
- Crio Bru, an odd brew of
ground caocao beans that takes some adjusting to enjoy. I have yet
to find the magic to this drink.
-
Cocoa Metro, which seems to make only a cold chocolate drink,
that one can always heat up! Hard to tell where they ave their
production but the founders are former Utah students and their
products are available locally.

Summary of sources of hot chocolate in Salt Lake City
Other sources for Hot Chocolate
-
Equal Exchange, this is a great company that pursues fair trade
policies and sells a couple different drinking chocolate mixes. My
favorite is the
Spicy Hot Chocolate mix. Equal parts of this and some pure cocoa
and you have a bracing and rich drink with just the right amount of
sweetness.
-
Scharfenberger Chocolate, one of my favorite sources, especially
of affordable pure cocoa.
-
Caribou Coffee also sells a great mix of dark chocolate chunks
from their website and offers the best mainstream hot chocolate in
their many fine outlines throughout the mid west. Sadly, they
changed ownership, have downsized considerably and have disappeared
from many markets outside of Minnesota.
- Kakawa Chocolate in
Sante Fe, a really original and fun place to visit the history of
chcolate.
- IGourmet is a general source of
gourmet products, including a reasonable selection of chocolate.
-
Allegro, the same folks who make coffee and tea. Sadly, this
company has stopped producing drinking cocoa.
