Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Patterns and Cell Press, the University of Utah Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute is pleased to offer the Patterns and Cell Press Early Career Travel Award to support in-person participation in the Banff International Research Station workshop Bridging Topology and Machine Learning for Data Science. The award provides up to $500 in travel reimbursement for an early-career researcher attending the workshop and reflects Patterns and Cell Press’s commitment to advancing innovative, interdisciplinary research in data science, machine learning, and computational methodology.

Eligibility: Confirmed in-person workshop participants who are graduate students or postdoctoral researchers are eligible to apply.

Application Materials: Applicants should email the following materials to SCI Associate Professor Bei Wang Phillips at by October 1, 2026:

• A current CV
• A one-page research statement describing their research interests and, where relevant, their connection to the themes of the workshop
• A short paragraph explaining how the travel award would support their participation, including any relevant financial need or other justification

Award and Reimbursement: The selected recipient will receive reimbursement of eligible transportation expenses up to $500 associated with travel to and from the workshop. Reimbursement will be based on documented expenses and subject to applicable reimbursement requirements. Additional instructions regarding receipts and reimbursement procedures will be provided to the award recipient.

The recipient will be selected based on the relevance of their research to the workshop, the strength of their application, and the potential impact of the award on their participation.
