Designed especially for neurobiologists, FluoRender is an interactive tool for multi-channel fluorescence microscopy data visualization and analysis.
Deep brain stimulation
BrainStimulator is a set of networks that are used in SCIRun to perform simulations of brain stimulation such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and magnetic transcranial stimulation (TMS).
Developing software tools for science has always been a central vision of the SCI Institute.
The Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute at the University of Utah is continuing to grow and is pursuing multiple new faculty hires at the intersection of computational science, data science, and science and engineering broadly (including social sciences). This growth will build on 5 new hires completed in 2022, and will expand the core research expertise at SCI, further enhance its strong research, and continue to broaden the diversity of faculty, students, and staff. A major goal is to attract new partnerships across the University and beyond. Candidates whose research expertise integrates social and technical aspects are of particular interest, as are candidates who can contribute to the university’s diversity. This announcement highlights multiple specific new faculty hires (see below for details) with more to follow.

The University of Utah is a Carnegie Research I Institution and member of the Association of American Universities (AAU); the SCI Institute is a trans-college, research-focused partnering entity at the University of Utah consisting of faculty from 4 academic units in 2 colleges along with students, and staff (185 current personnel). The SCI Institute’s vision is to see applied computing bring transformation across disciplines in a way that benefits the University of Utah and society at large. Its mission is to bring together excellence in diverse domains applied to multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary problems of societal importance. The Institute accomplishes these goals through the collaborative development, assembly, and/or application of applied scientific and data computing, imaging, and visualization tools.

Over more than two decades, the SCI Institute has established itself as an internationally recognized leader in translational innovations across computational and data science with leading research and training programs in the areas of visualization, scientific and biomedical computing, and image analysis applied to a broad range of challenging problems. For example, the SCI Institute is ranked by CSRankings (http://csrankings.org) as housing the top visualization group internationally. Alongside its research goals is a passion to educate students and staff in the pursuit of research. The SCI Institute is proud to have supported over 400 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and nearly 100 undergraduates to achieve an education at the cutting-edge of research. SCI graduates move into faculty positions with universities internationally and become innovators with companies such as Apple, Exxon Mobil, Nvidia, Google, Intel, Boston Scientific, Orthogrid, Philips Medical, and Medtronic. Additional information about the Institute and current faculty can be found at www.sci.utah.edu

The SCI Institute Director, Dr. Manish Parashar, is leading the expansion of its campus-wide, national, and international impact into exciting application areas. Candidates for SCI faculty positions can be at any stage of their career paths and should have a growing, active, academic/research record that includes computation. Successful candidates will come from one a broad range of research focus areas, including computational and data science, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, etc., and must show a clear passion for collaborative interactions with domain specialists. SCI faculty members typically have primary research appointments in the Institute and academic positions with a collaborating department in Colleges across the University. Additional information about the opportunity, the Institute, the University, and the area is available at this web site.

Located in metropolitan Salt Lake City in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, the University of Utah is the state’s flagship research institution and emphasizes exceptional scholarship, quality teaching, and professional service. The university serves over 32,000 students from across the U.S. and the world with over 72 major subjects at the undergraduate level and more than 90 major fields of study at the graduate level, including law and medicine. Known for its proximity to seven world-class ski resorts within 40 minutes of campus, the University of Utah encourages an active, holistic lifestyle, innovation, and collaborative thinking to engage students, faculty and business leaders. Salt Lake City is a vibrant, major metropolitan area with a diverse, multicultural population and numerous cultural and outdoor activities. Utah and the stunning Salt Lake Valley are undergoing robust economic growth with one of the Nation’s fastest-growing technology sectors and the University of Utah is acclaimed for its successes in technology-driven start-ups. The University has invested significantly in the SCI Institute and substantial further investments are now enabling these recruitments.

Salt Lake City is home to a robust array of diverse communities facilitating numerous opportunities for interaction with a range of civic and political organizations, given the city’s role as the governmental and social nerve center of the state. Utah public schools serve a diverse student body (statewide average: eight percent ELs and twenty-six percent non-white), notably higher in its urban districts. Utah is also home to the first state-legislated and funded K-16 dual language education model in the country.

SCI plans to hire new tenure track faculty as part of interdepartmental projects in topics such as biomedical informatics, computational cancer research, geosciences, and urban planning, The following searches are planned for the next 1-3 years:

1. Multiple tenure track positions in relevant research areas as part of a faculty cluster in computational oncology in partnership with the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the University of Utah’s comprehensive Cancer Center. Initial hires as part of the CCO will consist of two senior positions, including the Senior Director for Data Science at Huntsman Cancer Institute in the Department of Oncological Sciences (hired in 2022) and a Computational Oncology leader within the SCI Institute. These two senior hires will be followed by multiple junior faculty positions.
2. An early or mid-career (Assistant or Associate level) Tenure Track faculty position with clinical informatics, clinical research informatics, or translational bioinformatics with a focus on computational (including but not limited to ML and AI) and/or visualization methods with the academic home in the Department of Biomedical Informatics.

All candidates are invited to submit a CV and cover letter directly to the SCI Institute that describe their research vision for interdisciplinary, computationally enabled projects linked to one or more application domains. This research should fit in the context of the Institute’s mission of multidisciplinary bridge building (www.sci.utah.edu/the-institute/bridges.html). Formal applications should be made via our online applicant tracking system to one of the specific positions at:

All submissions will be treated with strict confidentiality. Review of complete applications will begin on February 1st, 2023.
